HYROX Nutrition Guide: How to Fuel Training and Race Day

HYROX has grown into one of the largest fitness competitions in the world, with more than two million athletes expected to race across the 2026/27 season. But most HYROX athletes spend far more time perfecting their sled push technique than their fueling strategy — and that’s usually the bigger performance gap.

What Makes HYROX Fueling Different

A HYROX race alternates eight 1km runs with eight functional-fitness stations (SkiErg, sled push, sled pull, burpee broad jumps, rowing, farmers carry, sandbag lunges, and wall balls), typically taking 60 to 90+ minutes for age-group athletes. That format demands both the glycogen availability of an endurance event and the power output of a strength circuit — which is why fueling advice built for a 5K or a powerlifting meet doesn’t translate well.

Training-Phase Nutrition

During your HYROX training block, your carbohydrate needs will shift depending on the day:

  • Strength/station-focused days — moderate carbohydrate, higher protein to support recovery and adaptation
  • Run-focused or interval days — higher carbohydrate intake to support glycogen replenishment and quality training
  • Combined/simulation training days — your highest carbohydrate need, since these sessions most closely mimic race demands
  • Protein intake should stay consistent across the week to support the significant recovery demand of combined strength-and-endurance training.

    Race-Week Carbohydrate Strategy

    In the 1–3 days before your race, many athletes benefit from a modest increase in carbohydrate intake to top off glycogen stores. The right amount and timing depends on your race duration, division, and how your gut tolerates a higher-carb intake — which is exactly why this should be tested in training, not decided for the first time on race week.

    Race-Day Fueling Timing

    • Pre-race meal: eaten with enough time to digest before your wave start, typically higher in carbohydrate and lower in fat and fiber to reduce GI risk
    • During the race: for most age-group athletes racing under 90 minutes, in-race fueling needs are minimal, though hydration matters throughout; longer or elite-level efforts may benefit from small amounts of carbohydrate mid-race
    • Hydration: HYROX venues are often indoor and warm, which increases sweat losses — plan fluid and electrolyte intake accordingly, especially in the hours before your wave

    Underfueling in training is the single most common issue we see in HYROX athletes. Because the sport combines strength and endurance demands, athletes following a low-carbohydrate or aggressive fat-loss approach during training often find their station performance and run splits both suffer — the “wall ball wall” in the back half of a race is frequently a fueling problem, not just a fitness problem.

    After hard training sessions or the race itself, prioritize carbohydrate and protein within the first couple of hours to support glycogen replenishment and muscle repair, especially important given how frequently HYROX athletes train both qualities in the same week.
